Kirsty Hulka = Sgt. Hulka
As a young lass, Sgt. Hulka (aka Kirsty Hulka) studied classical piano for a long time. Her piano teacher called her a thumper because she ‘thumped’ every song. Fast forward to her teenage years and her dad started taking her to local blues shows in Fremantle. She was in awe! Halfway through studying classical piano at the University of Western Australia, she realised she wasn’t any good at Western Art Music and taught herself how to play Blues. She played in many original bands around Perth and after a while decided to go out on her own as Sgt. Hulka – a nickname that was given to her in high school by a maths teacher from the 1980’s ‘Stripes’.
